Interview Techniques
First impressions are very important.
Dress smartly and professionally.
You should research the company using their web site and other sources. Ideas are:-
- Who it is owned by
- Who are their main competitors
- What services or products do they offer
- What is it’s size
- How long has it been established
- Latest news etc.
Ensure you know the exact location, if you are unsure always do a trial journey. Be in plenty of time for your interview, make sure you know the salary, who you are meeting, what their position is and how you pronounce their name.
You will be expected to answer questions about your career to date, current/former employer, what your strengths and weaknesses are and what role you are looking for.
Go prepared with a list of questions to ask.
Do not answer questions with just a “yes” or a “no”, always try to give a more in-depth answer.
Before leaving, establish what the next step will be.
Body Language
Do not underestimate the power of body language. The way in which you present yourself will tell an employer a lot about you:
- Maintain good eye contact
- Your handshake should be firm and confident
- Always maintain good posture
- Be a good listener – acknowledge comments with nods and if there is more than one person, switch your glance between them at regular intervals
- Smile, try to relax and enjoy the interview!
